From October 23-25, 2019, more than 250 scholars, practitioners, decisionmakers, and students from 40 countries came together for the First International Conference on Environmental Peacebuilding. The conference, organized by the Environmental Peacebuilding Association (EnPAx) and hosted by the University of California, Irvine (UCI), engaged a broad range of people working on distinct areas of thought and practice to share diverse experiences and insights.
The conference reflected on the paths that scholars and practitioners from different fields and perspectives have pioneered over half a century to understand and address the linkages between the environment, conflict, and peace. It was also a sign that we, as the environmental peacebuilding community, are learning from each other and building a valuable path forward; we are weaving together diverse areas of thought and practice into a field that advances both sustainable peace and sustainable development.
