The Biodiversity Support Program's Armed Conflict and the Environment Project ran from 1998 to 2001 to identify and raise awareness about the negative impacts of armed conflict on the environment, and develop concrete strategies for mitigating these impacts both before, during, and after conflict. This publication highlights the main findings and key lessons of this project, and outlines a number of recommendations for improving the effectiveness of conservation efforts during and following armed conflict. In addition, this guide outlines priorities for future research on this subject, and indicates where to find further information. While primarily directed at the conservation community (practitioners and policy-makers), the lessons in this guide will be useful for a variety of stakeholders, including relief and development organizations, local communities, and others.
